The war on drug

The House I live in was a very informative documentary and that I give a lot of credit to the director of the documentary, Eugene Jarecki. The documentary has enabled us to understand another angle of the situations of the drug war in the United States. Over the years, the government has been investing significant funds into tackling drug abuse in America. What is surprising is that efforts that had been by various administrations in the United States from the Reagan administration to President Bush's administration had caused a negative societal impact, one that affected, the families and societies of those convicted of drug use and drug peddling. The documentary also highlights the discrimination that exists in the prosecution of such cases. For example the prosecution of crack and powder cocaine.

I totally agree with the documentary, the facts put forward, and the issues raised in the documentary. However, I believe that in a way the documentary took a narrow perspective on the analysis of the issue and that as much as the efforts of the law enforcements and the government, in general, had caused significant harm, as a director I would look at the bigger picture on the United States government efforts on the war on drugs especially in relations to fighting the entry of drugs in the United States and it impacts. This is because we must recognize that is through the fight on the war on drugs that led to the capture of drug lords such as Frank Lucas, Pablo Escobar and many other drug kingpins. Such efforts significantly reduced the inflow of drugs into the United States and also reduced the number of people that could be affected by the drugs.

Handful

Handful who is Mauma’s daughter is the character that I like most in the novel. One unique thing about Handful is the fact that she sees hope where no one sees any hope. This is because despite being a young girl, almost Sarah’s age, Handful, had already an idea of how she would one day go away from Charleston and be free. When the others had no hope of ever going away from Charleston, Handful always kept her hope alive. Despite of being unhappy of being a slave, Handful is very happy that she is a secret friend to Sarah and that means a lot to her. It is through their friendship Sarah that Handful is able to learn how to read and write. Something that really helps in the later sections of the book where she is able to send letters to Sarah and thus they are able to communicate effectively.
Despite coming from a disadvantaged home, Handful never let this ruin her morale in any way. Instead, she uses this as her main drive to for a better life. Handful does a lot of perseverance and at no time did she lose her temper nor hurt any other person in the book despite being hurt several times. After Mauma going away for thirteen years, she gets back with her younger sister Sky, who Handful quickly gets attached to and also teaches her how to carry out her duties. To prove her selfless nature, Handful agrees to escape along with her younger sister. Finally, her dreams come true when Sarah, Mrs. Grimke’s daughter is able to smuggle them out of Charleston as they posed as Widows.
Handful is great source of motivation to anyone since she shows us that all our dreams are valid and that we only need to believe in ourselves and our goals.

Reading the book

The Invention of Wings
Reading the book the “The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd” was one of my greatest achievements this semester. First of all before starting to read the book I took my time to learn about the author, Sue Monk Kidd and the previous books she had written. After knowing about the author, it was then that I knew this book would be a master piece. After identifying that the book was organized into six parts I organized myself and put my own targets to finish the book. I gave myself a week to finish it, considering my schedule.
I was able to finish Part 1 of the book within two days and that set my pace for reading the book. Part one of the book made me want to know more of how the story unfolds. As I was reading the book I was often moved by the suffering of the slaves and there were instances that I could really feel their pain. However, this did not stop my zeal to want to finish reading the book, instead I wanted to know more about how what Sarah would do and what would happen to their friendship. As I started the second part I found the story being even more interesting and thus I found myself reading the book even more than I thought I would. On the third day, I was already way ahead of my schedule since I was through with the third Part of the book. Keeping in mind I had only three parts remaining to complete the book and 4 days remaining as per my schedule, I knew that I had ample time to understand the book effectively.
Having completed the third part I couldn’t wait to start on the fourth part since the book kept being more captivating as I went on reading. As I was reading through the fourth part of the book I was so excited and I kept thinking that the liberation was close and that the slaves would be free within no time. This is because in this part of the book, we see Denmark as the hero and I was sure that he would deliver the slaves. After finishing the fourth part I realized that would not be happening any sooner since their hero at that time had been killed. This never killed my hopes of reading but rather I was curious to know more about what Sue Monk Kidd had for us in the later parts of the book. Congratulating myself for completing the four parts of the book, I settled down to finish the remaining two parts of the book. The last sections of the book were even better and left me happy. The ending of the book was marvelous and left me smiling.

Reflection

Reflection

Reflection

To prepare myself effectively so as to be able to handle the paper effectively, I first of all went through the question more than once. After understanding it, I went through two you tube videos that were explaining on how to write a good argument. To be able to pick the best article to discuss, I took my time and went through all the articles that were available and thus I had an idea of what each article was talking about and hence it was my time to choose the best article. I chose “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work” written by Jean Anyon. I found the article exciting and very relevant to my life experience as a child and thus I easily settled for it and supported the arguments being put forward by Jean Anyon.

Having written before in this class, there were fewer negative thoughts and thus my main issue was whether I would be able put out a strong argument on the paper and also if I would be able to cite the document appropriately. I kept encouraging myself as I wrote the first paragraph and by the time I was on my third paragraph I was already familiar with my work and thus I never felt bothered again. On the other hand, my main source of motivation was the fact that I wanted to share my experience as a child as m main arguments in the paper and that really motivated me in writing. The other source of motivation was the fact that my class interactions with class members and thus I would get my source of motivation from them.

As I kept writing the paper, memories of my childhood education kept going through my head and I would often giggle or smile as I remember what education was back then. I also read a wide range of journals to gain extra knowledge on the topic so that I could also understand what other individuals had to say about the argument. This was very important to me since it enabled me to understand some of the arguments that had been put forward by Jean Anyon.

Generally, I can say that it was a great experience the paper and that not even the negative thoughts could hinder me from writing a good paper. Being optimistic and doing wide research is what contributed towards my successful completion of the paper.

Expectation of Education and Popular Culture

In the present day, education is regarded as one of the most important tools of life. As a result I believe that with education, I am able to fight ignorance and thus become more knowledgeable, enhance my level of critical thinking and also enhance my understanding of the world around us. Through reading broadly and researching I believe that I am able to gain numerous knowledge that is important for the survival in the present day world. That is the reason I prefer to further my education up to this point. If it were not for the greater expectations that I have in education, I do not believe that I would be where I am today.

One of our greatest motivation for educations, is that we are motivated by the fruits that come along with becoming educated. Some of these motivations are a good job, good house and to be able to earn a living. These may be perceived as secondary expectations but it is important to highlight that these goals are the very reason as to why most individuals have embraced education in the present day, especially the young population. In the present day, sites such as YouTube one of the common sites across the United States. Most individuals are able to gain from it in one way or another. The website has everything that one would require and thus on can get videos that relate to a certain subjects or even videos that motivate one to continue working hard in education. In the present day most students my age, perceive the YouTube one of the best site and easy to use site. An individual is able to subscribe to the channels that he or she believes that are of interest to him or her. For example if we had a lecture in the morning that discussed about recession, it would be very easy for me to be able to get other videos that discuss about recession in America in depth. Such channels in YouTube also embrace the use of humor in teaching and thus most us (students) are able to relate to the learning with ease. YouTube has become one of the best pop cultures for many students across the United States and most of the students are able to relate to the videos since no one knows them and also it is better due to the fact that one is able to rewind, forward or even play over and over so as to be able to enhance understanding. There are also numerous posts on real one on one interviews of individuals that have been able to succeed in education, regardless of their background and thus becoming a constant source of motivation.

My Education

My Education

Being the eldest girl in our family, my high school experience was very new, and unexpected. In Saudi Arabia, girls and boysare not allowed to be in the same class and thus in high school I was at a pure girl’s school, Fiarest High School. Due, to the conservative nature of the Kingdom, being in high school was a great experience for me and most of my siblings mainly looked at me as a role model and a source of hope of and motivation.

Over the years, the Saudi Kingdom had liberalized the system of education especially towards the girl’s school. This enabled me to have a normal high school experience and enjoy the facilities just like the other males in the boy’s school. For the first time in high school was allowed to pursue a wide range of subject and this made me very excited about school. In fact my whole perception about high school changed. I remember going back home and advising my siblings to work so hard so that they could get to high school since they would get an opportunity to study what they loved the most. Our schools were equipped with latest state of the art technology and thus we had significant facilities that we would enjoy during our free hours.

I must say it is in high school where I was able to sharpen my social skills and thus I was able to gain a lot of friends who were very helpful. Friends who we not only shared the good times but also shared our past experiences and the solutions to the day to day challenges that we faced as the girls of the next generation. It was there that I got the zeal to work and study abroad so that I could one day make an impact to the Kingdom. I owe my actualization to the great teachers that teachings that I was able to gain during my years in class. Despite facing some rebelliousness from some of the people around me in relations to school and conservative nature of the school. As for me I never let such things get into my head I would frequently visit my guidance and counselling teacher who would constantly encourage and also remind me of the saying “If you educate a girl, you educate a nation.” The saying never slipped my brain and I believe that I would be able to achieve all my goals as a result of the inspiration from the people that cared about me such as Mrs Farouq, the guidance and counselling teacher.
